Abstract

Visiting a behavioral health facility can make people nervous for any number of reasons. Ensuring that our system of care offers safe environments in which these visits and encounters are more comfortable for individuals is an important goal for all providers within the DWIHN.

The LGBTQAI+ community is very diverse. In addition to being LGBTQ, they may be any race or ethnicity, rich or poor, speakers of English or other languages, and may come from religious or non-religious backgrounds. Each of these factors, can impact their treatment experience. In order to provide holistic services and care to in the most effective way, staff must be able to understand how people’s identities, experiences, and relationships with the world around them might affect their health (National LGBT Health Education Center).

Delivery of affirming care for individuals that identify as transgender, lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, intersex, asexual, two-spirited, plus additional identities not included in current discourse. An emphasis on clinical care with transgender identified individuals will provide continuing education to practitioners to ensure that services are delivered in a respectful and safe manner within our system of care.
