Training Description: Fifteen National Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) Standards for health and health care have been published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Minority Health. This presentation will provide a brief overview of the standards and their intent followed by a discussion of concrete strategies and actions that organizations can use to support implementation of the standards.
Upon completion of this presentation participants will:
1. understand the scope and intent of the National CLAS Standards;
2. learn at least two CLAS implementation strategies in each of four organizational areas, policy, infrastructure, practice, and workforce development;
3. examine a framework for selecting meaningful implementation strategies specific to their organization; and
4. discuss implementation challenges and opportunities in their organization.

Suggested Participants: Professionals who work in Community Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, Juvenile Justice and Substance Abuse systems with children, adolescents and their families in Wayne County, including advocates, case managers, child mental health professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and supports coordinators), direct care workers, family advocates, family members, licensed professional counselors, nurses, occupational therapists, parents and peer support specialists.
Continuing Education Credits: 2.0 Continuing Education Credits are offered for this training. Participants must arrive on time and remain in the training for it's entirety. You must have your license number when you check in.
- Social Workers: 2.0 Continuing Education Credits are approved for this training.
- Counselors: 2.0 Continuing Education Credits are approved for this training. The VCE is a National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC)-Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP) and may offer NBCC approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP is solely responsible for all aspects of the program.
- Substance Abuse Professionals: 2.0 Non-Specific Continuing Education Credits are approved by MCBAP for substance use professionals, such as Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CADC) and Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CAADC).
- Children's Mental Health Professionals (CMHP): These training hours meet the MDCH training requirement for CMHP staff.
- Qualified Mental Health Professionals (QMHP): These training hours meet the MDCH training requirement for QMHP staff.
Registration/Walk In Policy: Participants may attempt to attend the training as a walk-in (someone that did not pre-register). However, walk-ins will NOT be guaranteed seats or materials. Walk-ins will be asked to wait until the training begins in order to receive training materials and be seated to ensure there is enough room. Plan to pre-register to ensure your attendance.
