Do you know what self-determination (SD) is or what it involves? If you had to explain SD, could you? Did you know that there are different models of SD and which type(s) is offered by the organization where you work? Do you know how SD differs from person-centered planning? How familiar are you with these terms: “fiscal intermediary,” “agency with choice,” “supports broker”? Did you know that people with serious mental illness are able to get SD arrangements tooFor answers to these questions and more, plan to attend the July Friday Intensive! 

 

Ellen Sugrue Hyman, MDHHS Self Determination Coordinator, A sole practitioner, Ellen Sugrue Hyman focuses on estate planning for young families and families with members who have disabilities. She is also a consultant on self-determination to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. In that capacity, Ms. Hyman drafts policy and practice guidelines, technical assistance, and informational and training materials. In addition, Ms. Hyman is a consultant to The Arc Michigan. Licensed to practice law in both Illinois and Michigan, she is a frequent presenter on issues related to estate planning, self-determination, and fiscal intermediaries. A former member of the Probate and Estate Planning Council, Ms. Hyman is the author of "Hiring and Managing Personal Assistants" (2007) and coauthor of "Empowering Choices, Enriching Possibilities" (2001).

 
 

 

Audience; Who should attend: Certified and non-certified peers, recovery coaches, peer mentors, peer support specialists, parent support partners, youth advocates, youth peer support specialists
