HandoutsAs we continue our efforts to become more “green” we will be reducing printed handouts and moving towards distributing power points and resources electronically. For this and future Children's Mental Health Grand Rounds trainings, you will receive the handouts as an attachment in your final confirmation e-mails, which are sent prior to the training. Print copies of handouts WILL NOT be provided by DWMHA for this training.

Suggested Participants: Professionals who work in Community Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, Juvenile Justice and Substance Abuse systems with children, adolescents and their families in Wayne County, including advocates, case managers, child mental health professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and supports coordinators), direct care workers, family advocates, family members, licensed professional counselors, nurses, occupational therapists, parents and peer support specialists.
Professional staff within our Community Partners who interact with children, adolescents and their families, who are part of the Community Mental Health System, including Department of Human Services; Hospitals; Law Enforcement; School Personnel, including Detroit Public Schools; and other Social Service Organizations.


Training Description: Fifteen National Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) Standards for health and health care have been published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Minority Health. This presentation will provide a brief overview of the standards and their intent followed by a discussion of concrete strategies and actions that organizations can use to support implementation of the standards. Terry Cross is the lead author of Towards a Culturally Competent System of Care and has provided consultation and training to organizations internationally on achieving behavioral health equity and elimination of behavioral health care disparities.

Learning Objectives:

1. understand the scope and intent of the National CLAS Standards;
2. learn at least two CLAS implementation strategies in each of four organizational areas, policy, infrastructure, practice, and workforce development;
3. examine a framework for selecting meaningful implementation strategies specific to their organization; and
4. discuss implementation challenges and opportunities in their organization.

About the Speaker: Terry (Ha-ne-ga-noh), an enrolled member of the Seneca Nation, received his master’s degree in social work from Portland State University in Portland, Oregon. He is the founding executive director of NICWA, now serving as senior advisor. He is the author of Positive Indian Parenting and co-authored Towards a Culturally Competent System of Care, published by Georgetown University. He has 40 years of experience in child welfare, including 10 years direct practice.
 

Continuing Education Credits: 2.0 Continuing Education Credits are offered for this training.  Participants must arrive on time and remain in the training for it's entirety.  You must have your license number when you check in.

  • Social Workers:  2.0 Continuing Education Credits are approved for this training. 
  • Counselors: 2.0 Continuing Education Credits are approved for this training. The VCE is a National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC)-Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP) and may offer NBCC approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP is solely responsible for all aspects of the program.
  • Substance Abuse Professionals: 2.0 Non-Specific Continuing Education Credits are approved by MCBAP for substance use professionals, such as Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CADC) and Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CAADC).
  • Children's Mental Health Professionals (CMHP): These training hours meet the MDCH training requirement for CMHP staff.
  • Qualified Mental Health Professionals (QMHP): These training hours meet the MDCH training requirement for QMHP staff.
  • Medical Professionals: The Wayne State University School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide Continuing Medical Education for physicians. 

The Wayne State University School of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 2.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)TM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Walk-ins will be asked to wait until the training begins in order to receive training materials and be seated to ensure there is enough room. Plan to pre-register to ensure your attendance.
