There is no cost to attend this training. 

Handouts: As we continue our efforts to become more “green” we will be reducing printed handouts and moving towards distributing power points and resources electronically. For this and future Children's Mental Health Grand Rounds trainings, you will receive the handouts as an attachment in your final confirmation e-mails, which are sent several days prior to the training. Print copies of handouts WILL NOT be provided by DWMHA for this training.

Suggested Participants: Professionals who work in Community Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, Juvenile Justice and Substance Abuse systems with children, adolescents and their families in Wayne County, including advocates, case managers, child mental health professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and supports coordinators), direct care workers, family advocates, family members, licensed professional counselors, nurses, occupational therapists, parents and peer support specialists.
Professional staff within our Community Partners who interact with children, adolescents and their families, who are part of the Community Mental Health System, including Department of Human Services; Hospitals; Law Enforcement; School Personnel, including Detroit Public Schools; and other Social Service Organizations.


Training Description: Youth between the ages of 14 and 21 have the daunting task of transitioning from adolescence to adulthood. These youth are working to understand and make decisions regarding school, employment/finance, interpersonal relationships and other independent living skills.  Youth within the mental health system are faced with additional challenges of tackling these skills in addition to juggling their own mental health needs. This training is geared to assist participants learn strategies to work with transitioning youth and their families in the mental health setting. 

 
Course Objectives:

Participants will gain knowledge and understanding on:

1. Identifying transitional aged youth and some of the challenges they face
 
2. Clinical topic/themes unique to transitional aged youth
 
3. Confidentiality when working with transitional aged youth and their families
 
4. Cultural awareness
 
5. Interventions
 
6. Engagement strategies 
 
7. Suggested resources
 
8. Youth Peer Support Specialist Service to promote positive outcomes

 

About the Speaker(s):

Ms. Michele Clark, has been in the professional helping industry for almost 20 years. Ms. Clark earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology in Illinois and Master’s degree from the #1 School of Social Work, the University of Michigan.  Michele’s vast range of experience includes the following: foster care worker, assessment specialist, director of a comprehensive day treatment program, clinical therapist, former Y.I.T. (Youth In Transition) facilitator, PMTO Specialist (Parent Management Training Oregon model), and a candidate in the TFCBT (Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) program.  Ms. Clark has proudly offered her services and expertise at Development Centers in Detroit for the past 10 years, where she played in instrumental role in bringing the Cornerstone Program to the agency.

Kristina Dristy has a BA in psychology and a wealth of experience working with youth.  Kristina is currently the Youth Peer Support Statewide Coordinator for the Association for Children’s Mental Health (ACMH) working to ensure all SED youth have access to needed services and supports, including Youth Peer Support Services. 


Continuing Education Credits: 2.0 Continuing Education Credits are offered for this training. Participants must arrive on time and remain in the training for it's entirety.  You must have your license number when you check in.

  • Social Workers:  2.0 Continuing Education Credits are approved for this training. 
  • Substance Abuse Professionals: 2.0 Non-Specific Continuing Education Credits are approved by MCBAP for substance use professionals, such as Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CADC) and Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CAADC).
  • Children's Mental Health Professionals (CMHP): These training hours meet the MDCH training requirement for CMHP staff.
  • Qualifies Mental Health Professionals (QMHP): These training hours meet the MDCH training requirement for QMHP staff.
  • Medical Professionals: The Wayne State University School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide Continuing Medical Education for physicians. 

Registration/Walk In Policy: Participants may attempt to attend the training as a walk-in (someone that did not pre-register). However, walk-ins will NOT be guaranteed seats or materials. Walk-ins will be asked to wait until the training begins in order to receive training materials and be seated to ensure there is enough room. Plan to pre-register to ensure your attendance.
