Handouts: As we continue our efforts to become more “green” we will be reducing printed handouts and moving towards distributing power points and resources electronically. For this and future Children's Mental Health Grand Rounds trainings, you will receive the handouts as an attachment in your final confirmation e-mails, which are sent several days prior to the training. Print copies of handouts WILL NOT be provided by DWMHA for this training.
 
Suggested Participants: Professionals who work in Community Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, Juvenile Justice and Substance Abuse systems with children, adolescents and their families in Wayne County, including advocates, case managers, child mental health professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and supports coordinators), direct care workers, family advocates, family members, licensed professional counselors, nurses, occupational therapists, parents and peer support specialists.
Professional staff within our Community Partners who interact with children, adolescents and their families, who are part of the Community Mental Health System, including Department of Human Services; Hospitals; Law Enforcement; School Personnel, including Detroit Public Schools; and other Social Service Organizations.

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course will address impact of drugs on brain function, with a focus on adolescent brain function and how to provide effective treatment interventions with youth with substance use disorders. Focus will be on cannabis and its impact on adolescent brain function and development. The session will also address the differences between conventional counseling and therapy and SUD treatment, and the skills effective SUD clinicians need to possess. Initial interviewing techniques, emotional regulatory approaches, and moving beyond talk therapy to address the consequences of use will also be covered. The session will also address the skill building elements that should be built into effective treanent to sustain recovery and to stem relapse. 

 

OBJECTIVES
Foster an understanding of how SUD treatment is its own specialty, including a provision of the essential skills that differentiate SUD treatment from more conventional approaches. 

 
An understanding of how drugs, in particular how THC, impacts adolescent brain development in the context of normal adolescent brain development and functioning
 
Development of interviewing and assessment skills to effectively "place" a youth on the SUD continuum, including an understanding of the developmental lags and their associated implications for treatment. 
 
Skill building through the use of client centered assessments to develop capacity for recovery resilience and progression

Receipts will be available upon request.
