ABSTRACT:

Autism is a complex disorder involving many providers within the system of care. Due to the complexity of the disorder and the service system, families and care providers find it difficult to navigate who needs to be involved in treatment and at what points in care do they need to work together for optimal outcomes. Without care coordination, providers make decisions without the necessary knowledge which can delay treatment, or more importantly impact outcomes in a negative way. Additionally, families experience increased stress and burden when treatment team members are not coordinated in their care. This presentation will focus on defining who should be on the treatment team and how to better understand the roles and values of each team member. Discussions will also include tips on building positive relationship with members of the care team as a first step coordination of care. Discussions will also focus on barriers to care coordination such as difficulties with communication and increased work demands for providers. Finally, potential solutions providers can use to overcome challenges to care coordination will be discussed to give participants tools to take home from the presentation that will help them to better coordinate care for the children and families they serve.
