Suggested Participants: Professionals who work in Community Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, Juvenile Justice and Substance Abuse systems with children, adolescents and their families in Wayne County, including advocates, case managers, child mental health professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and supports coordinators), direct care workers, family advocates, family members, licensed professional counselors, nurses, occupational therapists, parents and peer support specialists.
Professional staff within our Community Partners who interact with children, adolescents and their families, who are part of the Community Mental Health System, including Department of Human Services; Hospitals; Law Enforcement; School Personnel, including Detroit Public Schools; and other Social Service Organizations.


Training Description

This course is a 2-hour session of combined literature/ lecture and activities. The course begins with an introduction to psychopathology in children and looks at trauma experiences from a historical perspective. The course covers the PHQ-A Child Assessment and different diagnosis across the spectrum of child pathology. The psychotherapy section presents a family focused treatment model for addressing differential diagnosis and experiences of trauma and the developing brain. Lastly, the course incorporates therapeutic activities to aid child healthy development.

Learning Objectives:

Objective 1: Participants will have knowledge on childhood mental health disorders and the impact of traumatic experiences on the developing brain.  

Objective 2: Participants will be able to highlight signs and symptoms and recognize effective treatment models.

Objective 3: Participants will understand and utilize the PHQ-A Child questionnaire.  

Objective 4: Participants will incorporate therapeutic activities to improve client engagement.

About the Speaker(s)

Aja Burks, LMSW, the owner of Transformative Mind Counseling, received her master’s degree in clinical social work from MichiganState University.  In her group practice, they strive to transform the minds of children and adults with anxiety, depression and those with childhood experiences of trauma. In addition to her work as a mental health therapist, she works at Wayne State University as an instructor in the counseling education program. She also is working on her Ph. D at Wayne State University working on her dissertation.

Aja has professional experiences as an Instructor and Recruitment Director with the Adolescent Project at Michigan State University as well as extensive experience as a Crisis Mental Health Therapist in Detroit and Community Based Therapist working in the Indianapolis. She has sat on panels for National Black Caucus of State Legislatures Mental Health Conference and the State of Michigan Trauma and Community Violence Summit and countless others. 


Continuing Education Credits: 2.0 Continuing Education Credits are offered for this training. Participants must arrive on time and remain in the training for it's entirety.  You must have your license number when you check in.

  • Social Workers:  2.0 Continuing Education Credits are approved for this training. 
  • Substance Abuse Professionals: 2.0 Non-Specific Continuing Education Credits are approved by MCBAP for substance use professionals, such as Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CADC) and Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CAADC).
  • Children's Mental Health Professionals (CMHP): These training hours meet the MDCH training requirement for CMHP staff.
  • Qualifies Mental Health Professionals (QMHP): These training hours meet the MDCH training requirement for QMHP staff.
  • Medical Professionals: The Wayne State University School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide Continuing Medical Education for physicians. 

Registration/Walk In Policy: Participants may attempt to attend the training as a walk-in (someone that did not pre-register). However, walk-ins will NOT be guaranteed seats or materials. Walk-ins will be asked to wait until the training begins in order to receive training materials and be seated to ensure there is enough room. Plan to pre-register to ensure your attendance.
