with a Substance Use Disorder

Speaker: Dr. Steven Genden PhD LP CAADC

Date: Thursday, August 15, 2019

Time: 9am - 12pm

Location: Wayne County Community College District, Downriver Campus- 20111 Northline Road, Taylor MI 48180

Motivational Interviewing is a clinical discussion that guides the client toward resolving ambivalence. It respects and honors the point of view of the client. Especially when working with an adolescent, this can be very challenging. Social work is dedicated toward a similar mission of respect and working as a partner with a client to achieve positive change.

Motivational Interviewing is based on respecting and honoring the individual’s own understanding and culture and does not impose the clinician’s belief system upon the individual. It asserts that everyone is an expert on his own needs. It uses a guiding method, not a directing one as a central tenet. The spirit of motivational interviewing therefore reflects respecting cultural diversity and a social justice
