Abstract:

Obesity is a growing concern in the United States, particularly among children and adolescents. Obesity is typically defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation in the body. Calculating body mass index (BMI) is the most widely accepted method of screening for obesity in children and adolescents with abnormal BMI cut-offs being determined by age- and gender-specific percentiles. The mechanism of obesity development is not fully understood and is believed to be a disorder with multiple causes. Environmental factors, lifestyle preferences, and cultural environment play pivotal roles in the rising prevalence of obesity worldwide. Obese children and adolescents are at increased risk of medical and psychological complications and are likely to stay obese into adulthood. Understanding its causes is critical to the creation of strategies to improve our children's health. Obesity requires behavior change by the child, adolescent and parents to improve health outcomes. Poor outcomes may be attributed to the lack of adherence to the behavior change recommendations. Obesity requires behavior change by the child, adolescent and parents to improve health outcomes. Poor outcomes may be attributed to the lack of adherence to the behavior change recommendations. Clinicians working with obese children should have knowledge of the components of a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of interacting with the child and family in a positive, empathetic and non-judgmental manner. This webinar aims at discussing factors leading to obesity and learning how overweight and obese categories are determined in a clinical setting. It also examines how to assess readiness for change and to use Motivational Interviewing as a family-centered, collaborative intervention for improved adherence.

Course Objectives:

  • Learn about factors leading to obesity as well as what other health conditions are affected by obesity.
