2011.11.2 Trauma Learning Series: Trauma Informed Assessment with Children and Youth (ages 6-17)

TIME: 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm
LOCATION: This training will be available through video-conference at five (5) locations. The speaker will be at the LIVE Site: The Guidance Center, Southgate. The Broadcast Sites are: The Children's Center, Detroit; Community Living Services, Wayne; Lincoln Behavioral Services, Redford and Northeast Guidance Center, Detroit.

SUGGESTED PARTICIPANTS: Professionals who work in Community Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse systems with children, adolescents and their families in Wayne County, including advocates, case managers, child mental health professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and supports coordinators), direct care workers, family advocates, family members, licensed professional counselors, nurses, occupational therapists, parents and peer support specialists.
Professional staff within our Community Partners who interact with children, adolescents and their families, who are part of the Community Mental Health System, including Department of Human Services; Hospitals; Law Enforcement; School Personnel, including Detroit Public Schools; and other Social Service Organizations.
The VCE and the National Institute for Trauma and Loss in Children (TLC) have initiated a new partnership to provide quality trainings on trauma and working with children who have experienced trauma. TLC is an internationally recognized program of the Starr Institute for Training, a leader in transformational programs for children, families, school and communities. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Participants will be able to:
1. Discuss the importance of traumatized and at-risk children and adolescents from a trauma informed, strength-based perspective rather than only from a deficit focus.
2. Identify specific examples of how traumatized children and adolescents process and interpret behavioral and verbal interactions and expectations of others.
3. Identify the key differences between survivor/thriver; relief and resilience.
ABSTRACT:
This goal of this presentation is to provide participants with a perspective from which to view each child and adolescent as a person with unique experiences and view of self and others as well as individualized needs before initiating trauma informed treatment.

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS:
Continuing education credits are offered for this training. Participants must arrive on time and remain in the training for it's entirety including the question and answer portion. Late arrivals and early departures will result in the deduction of awarded credits. All participants MUST return to the check-in desk to sign-out and/pick-up your certificate of attendance or else you will forfeit your proof of attendance and training hours/credits!
-SOCIAL WORKERS: 3.0 continuing education credits are pending for this training.
-Trauma and Learning in Children (TLC) Certification: on half day credit will be awarded toward obtaining TLC Certification for attending this training. Attendance at the entire 2011-2012 trauma learning series (4 trainings) will provide participants with two full days towards TLC certification. TLC offers a specialized certification program on Trauma and Loss.
REGISTRATION:Registration is currently CLOSED. Walk-ins (those that are not pre-registered) will be
accepted.
Walk-ins are NOT guaranteed seats and will have to wait until the
training begins to receive training materials and in some instances a
seat.

Virtual Center of Excellence is an NBCC-Approved Continuing Education
Provider (ACEP) and may offer NBCC-approved clock hours for events that
meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP solely is responsible for all aspects
of the program.
