TRAINING DESCRIPTION:

NBLCA’s 2016 Winning at Living: State of HIV in Black America conference will reveal what it takes to win the fight at a pivotal time in history. Gain and share insights as we convene the HIV/AIDS community, including stakeholders, providers, funders, and consumers those who receive care. Hear from expert speakers and change agents who will address the current science of HIV/AIDS and identify the steps needed to end the epidemic in line with the 2020 action plan.  

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Attendees will be able to identify and understand specific risk factors, correlating factors, and causal factors which contribute to increased HIV/AIDS rates in Black/African American Communities.
  2. Attendees will be able to identify and understand strategies and interventions to reach specific sub-populations within Black/African-American Communities affected by or living with HIV/AIDS (i.e., MSM, LGBT, women and girls, incarcerated persons, substance users, etc.)
  3. Identify the steps needed to end the epidemic in line with the 2020 action plan. 
  4. Learn about Best Practices to address the HIV/ Aids epidemic.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:

Dr. Wyatt is a Clinical Psychologist, board certified Sex Therapist and Professor of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at The UCLA Semel Institute.

Dr. Wyatt was the first ethnic minority be trained as a sexologist. She received a prestigious NIMH Research Award examining sexual decision making among ethnic minority. She was the first African American woman in California to receive a Psychology license. Her research examines the sexual relationships of couples and the cultural context of risks for STIs and HIV. Her research was funded by the NIMH, NIDA, State and private funders since 1980. Dr. Wyatt has been selected as a senior research fellow by the COBB Institute.

Dr. Wyatt directs the Sexual Health program, the Phodiso Training Project in South Africa, the HIV/AIDS Translational Training Program, and the Center for Culture, Trauma and Mental Health Disparities.

Dr. Wyatt has published over 200 journal articles, provided Congressional testimony 10 times during the Clinton and Obama administrations, and has been recognized for her work by the American Psychological Association. She and her team were first to be funded by NIMH to develop an intervention for HIV positive women with histories of sexual violence, entitled “Healing Our Women”. 

Darrell Wheeler is president of the National Association of Social Workers and since July 2015 is Vice Provost for Public Engagement and Dean of Social Welfare of the University at Albany - SUNY.  Prior to his current position, Wheeler was dean of Loyola University’s School of Social Work – Chicago and was also associate dean for research and community partnerships at the Hunter College School of Social Work.

Wheeler is an educator and researcher who is one of the leading social work experts on HIV prevention and intervention, particularly in the African-American gay, bisexual, and transgender communities.  He is author and co-author of many articles, book chapters and monographs on AIDS. His work has been funded by key health organizations, including the National Institutes of Health, American International Health Alliance and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. His work has demonstrated a deep understanding of social work practice methods and the social work community. Wheeler has used research to advance the use of data and evidence in developing innovative programs and policy initiatives.

He appointed by the US Secretary of Health and Human Services and serves on the Office of AIDS Research Advisory Council.  Wheeler was a recipient of a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Primary Health Care Policy Fellow in 2003; a Henry and Lucy Moses Fellow at Hunter College in 2001-02; a Martin Luther King Jr. Service Award winner at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, in 1995 and was named one of the Outstanding Young Men of America in 1987 and 1988.  In 2015 he was named among the 30 most influential social workers alive today.

Wheeler earned his doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh in 1992, a master’s degree in public health at the University of Pittsburgh in 1990, a master in social work from Howard University in 1988, and a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Cornell College in 1981.

Continuing Education Credits: 4.0 Continuing Education Credits are offered for this training.  Participants must arrive on time and remain in the training for it's entirety.  You must have your license number when you check in.

  • Social Workers:  4.0 Continuing Education Credits are approved for this training.
  • Substance Abuse Professionals: 4.0 Non-Specific Continuing Education Credits are approved by MCBAP for substance use professionals, such as Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CADC) and Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CAADC).
  • Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP): These training hours meet the MDCH training requirement for QMHP staff.

Registration/Walk In Policy: Participants may attempt to attend the training as a walk-in (someone that did not pre-register). However, walk-ins will NOT be guaranteed seats or materials. Walk-ins will be asked to wait until the training begins in order to receive training materials and be seated to ensure there is enough room. Plan to pre-register to ensure your attendance.
