Information:

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other developmental disabilities have difficulty acquiring social skills and applying them as readily across settings as their typically developing peers. Targeting social skills in their natural environment can give these children the opportunity to receive direct instruction, practice, feedback and support to help establish a strong foundation of skills that can lead to improved quality of life. This presentation will explore how to utilize the evidence based practice of Applied Behavioral Analysis to promote social skill development in the natural environment. 


Learning Objectives:

1. Identify the 4 steps of Behavior Skills Training 
2. Recognize 2 – 3 social skills that would be expected of typically developing children 
and adolescents
3. Outline 5 evidenced based practices of ABA and how to apply them in contriving and capturing teaching opportunities 
4. Demonstrate prompting procedure to contrive natural environment teaching opportunity targeting an identified social skill

  -What is Behavior Skills Training?
  -What is Natural Environment and Incidental Teaching?
  -Social skills expectations in relation to developmental age
1:50 – 2:00
 -Break
2:00 – 2:50
 -Review of ABA strategies including: Antecedent interventions, type of prompts and 
 reinforcement, and generalization
 -Addressing problem behaviors during social skills training
 2:50 – 3:00
 -Break
3:00 – 3:50
 -Divide into small groups and identify opportunities to contrive social skills opportunities in the 
 natural environment
 -Have small groups demonstrate how to contrive social skills scenario and prompting procedures 
 until mastery
 

Walk-In Policy: Participants are welcome to attend the training as a walk-in (someone that did not pre-register), however, walk-ins will NOT be guaranteed seats or materials. Walk-ins will be asked to wait until the training begins in order to receive training materials and be seated to assure that there is enough room. Plan to pre-register to ensure your attendance.

If you work OUTSIDE of Wayne County there is a nominal $15.00 registration fee to attend this training. Please pay prior to your arrival by entering your credit card information when the registration process asks for it. You may also bring a company check or money order for the full amount with you to the registration table at the event as well. All checks/money orders can be made out to ‘DWMHA’. Receipts will be available upon request.

Refund/Cancellation Policy: Cancellation/Refund Policy: Substitutions are permitted at any time. No shows will be billed at the full training rate. Cancellations must be received in writing at least 7 business days prior to training to asmith1@dwmha.com to obtain a full refund. If cancellation is received less than 7 business days prior to training then no refund will be given..
