Using the PEAK Relational Training System To Promote Complex Verbal Behaviors
With: Dr. Jacob H. Daar, Ph.D., BCBA-D, Emergent Behavior Consulting, LLC
DATE: FRIDAY, August 11th, 2017
Time: 8:30am – 4:00pm (Registration starts 8:00am)
Location: Redford Plaza 9315 Telegraph, Redford, MI 48239
"Participants must be present and signed in by the start time of the event, and be present for the entire event, to be eligible to receive CEU’s. If a participant signs in 10 minutes late, or signs out 10 minutes early to leave, they will not receive CEU’s from the event."
Information: The purpose of this workshop is to introduce participants to the PEAK Relational Training System, a series of behavior analytic assessments and curriculums protocols that were designed to promote complex language skills in children with autism and related disabilities. The current workshop will consist of three sections. The first section will provide a review of the basic principles and conceptualizations of verbal behavior that underlie traditional ABA approaches to teaching language skills, followed by an introduction to relational frame theory and the value of targeting derived relational repertoires. This module will conclude with an introduction to the PEAK System, its core components, and the research underlying its use. The second section will focus on the Direct Training and Generalization modules of the PEAK, with an emphasis on assessment procedures, curriculum planning, and methods for implementation. The third section of the workshop will focus on the Equivalence and Transformation modules of the PEAK. Emphasis will be placed on procedures used to assess and promote derived relational responding, as well as strategies for improving program management. The PEAK Assessment can be utilized as an option to meet the Medicaid ABA Benefit bi- annual ABA Assessment Requirement.
Course Objectives:
At the completion of this workshop, participants can expect to be able to:
1. Describe the behavioral principles underlying verbal behavior approaches to language acquisition.
2. Describe the importance of generalized operant repertoires in developing language and cognitive skills, and how procedures, derived from relational frame theory, can be used to train such repertoires.
3. Describe the PEAK Relational Training System, the behavioral concepts underlying its approach, and the published research supporting its use.
4. Administer the PEAK-D and PEAK-G Pre-Assessment and Full Assessments protocols.
5. Program and implement a language-learning program using the PEAK-D and
PEAK-G curricula.
6. Administer the PEAK-E and PEAK-T Pre-Assessment and Full Assessment protocols.
7. Program and Implement language-learning programs using the PEAK-E and PEAK- T curricula.
8. Utilize the Comprehensive PEAK Reporting Materials to communicate progress and to evaluate procedures.
9. Develop modifications to PEAK programs, procedures, stimuli, if consumers fail to make therapeutic gains.

He is an assistant professor at Northern Michigan University's Psychology Department, where he is the program coordinator for NMU's Master's program in Applied Behavior Analysis and the Director of the Behavior Education Assessment and Research (BEAR) Center. Dr. Daar has been working with individuals with developmental, intellectual, and other disabilities for the past 9 years. His clinical activities have included both children and adult populations, as well as center-based, residential, and in-home supports. Dr. Daar primary research focus has been on language acquisition programing for children with autism, and on procedures that are designed to establish emergent relational responding repertoires.
