As we continue our efforts to become more “green” we will be reducing printed handouts and moving towards distributing power points and resources electronically. For this and future Children's Mental Health Lecture Series trainings, all handouts will be sent as an attachment in your final e-mail confirmation, prior to the training. Suggested Participants:
 
Professionals who work in Community Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, Juvenile Justice and Substance Abuse systems with children, adolescents and their families in Wayne County, including advocates, case managers, child mental health professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and supports coordinators), direct care workers, family advocates, family members, licensed professional counselors, nurses, occupational therapists, parents and peer support specialists.
Professional staff within our Community Partners who interact with children, adolescents and their families, who are part of the Community Mental Health System, including Department of Human Services; Hospitals; Law Enforcement; School Personnel, including Detroit Public Schools; and other Social Service Organizations.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This presentation will focus on understanding the unique needs of grandparents in the child welfare system. Learners will explore how to effectively engage these caregivers in services, including methods for facilitating healthy co-parenting relationships between grandparents and biological parents. Finally, reflective discussion will allow learners to consider their own biases and values that impact their approach to working with this population.

OBJECTIVES

• Gain knowledge on the prevalence of and considerations for working with grandparents in child welfare cases, reflecting on your own biases and how your values shape the work you do with this population.
• Explore considerations and techniques for enhancing engagement for grandparents and facilitating effective and healthy co-parenting relationships among grandparents and biological parents.
 
AGENDA
 
9:00-9:20: Introduce the audience to the scope and needs of grandparents as kinship placements in child welfare
9:20-10:00: Support strengthening grandparent engagement in services, including gathering information and building a culturally-humble and trauma-informed approach to this work; tying it to child and family teamwork.
10:00-10:40: Build methods and considerations for facilitating effective co-parenting relationships between parents and grandparents in child welfare.
10:40-11:00: Reflections and Q&A

-SOCIAL WORKERS: 2 continuing education credits are pending for this training.

-TRAINING HOURS: This event will count toward the annual training hours required by most provider agencies.
