COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This presentation will present the state of the science regarding the influence of father involvement on child health and well-being outcomes. We will discuss barriers to father involvement including paternal mental health struggles and systemic barriers that prevent some fathers from being involved in the lives of their children. Strategies for including fathers in work with children will be presented. Participants will be invited to consider their own work with fathers and families and to identify barriers and solutions to engaging fathers in child clinical work. The science is clear – when fathers are involved in the lives of their children, children thrive. This presentation will tackle the question of how to overcome systemic bias in order to fully engage fathers in the care of their children.

OBJECTIVES:

1. Participants will learn about the ways in which father involvement increases positive child outcomes and decreases negative outcomes
2. Participants will learn about systemic barriers to father involvement
3. Participants will learn strategies to overcome these barriers in their own clinical work with children and families.
