Marika Orme, MSA, MS, LLP
Date: September 18, 2025
Time: 9:00 am-11:00 am
Location: Virtual- Zoom
Course Description:
This training provides an in-depth exploration of the intersection between trauma and substance use in adolescents, with a focus on developmentally appropriate, trauma-informed, and future-focused care strategies. Participants will examine the neurobiological and behavioral impacts of trauma on youth, understand how trauma contributes to the onset and progression of substance use, and explore practical interventions that support recovery and resilience.
The session includes a brief review of current evidence-based practices such as Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Seeking Safety, and Risk Reduction through Family Therapy (RRFT), as well as emerging approaches leveraging technology, peer engagement, and creative expression. Through interactive case-based learning and structured discussion, participants will apply trauma-informed principles to real-world youth scenarios and consider how to integrate future-facing tools into clinical and community practice.
Objectives:
- Describe the relationship between trauma exposure and substance use in adolescents.
- Identify at least three evidence-based interventions for addressing trauma and substance use in youth.
- Explain how trauma and substance use affect adolescent brain development and behavior.
