Spotting & Responding to Anxiety in Children
With: Jessica Mayfield-Ashwood, LMSW
Date: November 20, 2025
Time: 9:00 am-11:00 am
Location: Virtual- Zoom
Course Description:
Anxiety in children often goes undetected or misinterpreted, resulting in missed opportunities for early intervention and caregiver support. This lecture equips clinicians with the knowledge and tools to identify anxiety symptoms in children and teaches them how to coach caregivers in recognizing, understanding, and responding to these symptoms. Through the lens of the fight, flight, freeze, and fawn responses, clinicians will explore the brain-body-behavior connection, practice developmentally appropriate language for explaining anxiety, and gain actionable tools to use in both clinical and community-based settings.
Course Objectives:
- Identify at least three symptoms of anxiety in children.
- Explain the fight, flight, freeze, and fawn responses and their behavioral manifestations.
- Demonstrate caregiver-friendly scripts to discuss anxiety with families using developmentally appropriate language.
- Practice at least two coping strategies that clinicians can model for caregivers and children.
- Apply trauma-informed and culturally responsive approaches when interpreting anxious behaviors.
