The Utilization & Implementation of ICD-10-CM and DSM-5 for Children and Adolescents

Children's Mental Health Grand Rounds will be available at 5 locations (4 via video-conference plus the live site.) Attendees will be able to share ideas, network, carpool and receive Continuing Education Credits.  Please read details and registration instructions below.

Suggested Participants: Professionals who work in Community Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, Juvenile Justice and Substance Abuse systems with children, adolescents and their families in Wayne County, including advocates, case managers, child mental health professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and supports coordinators), direct care workers, family advocates, family members, licensed professional counselors, nurses, occupational therapists, parents and peer support specialists.
Professional staff within our Community Partners who interact with children, adolescents and their families, who are part of the Community Mental Health System, including Department of Human Services; Hospitals; Law Enforcement; School Personnel, including Detroit Public Schools; and other Social Service Organizations.


Training Description

The training will serve to educate behavioral health clinical staff about how to use ICD-10-CM coding and the DSM-5 manual for diagnostic purposes for children and adolescents.  This will include an overview of ICD and DSM, the specific changes that were incorporated in ICD-10-CM and DSM-5 from earlier editions concerning children and adolescents, the differences and the relationship between these, and a discussion of the how this can be used in actual practice.  The training will incorporate a power-point presentation and an ongoing discussion between the participants and the presenter.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the differences between DSM-5 and ICD-10-CM and what these mean in terms of practice.
  2. Understand the coding changes between ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM diagnoses pertinent to children and adolescents and how to use these in practice.
  3. Learn specific diagnostic changes pertinent to children and adolescents between DSM-IV-TR and DSM-5.
  4. Learn how to use dimensional tools for help in making appropriate diagnoses in DSM-5 for children and adolescents.
About the Speaker

Steven Genden, PhD, LP, CAADC is a licensed clinical psychologist with over 40 years experience in the delivery of mental health services for psychiatric hospitals, private outpatient clinics and community mental health services. Since 1986, he has worked in the Community Mental Health System in Wayne County, MI. Dr. Genden had been involved in the implementation and training of evidence based practices for those suffering from severe mental illness and substance use disorders including COD, IDDT, CCSIC, MI, DBT, and supported housing initiatives.  He was elected to the Taskforce on Severe Mental Illness/Serious Emotional Disturbance for the American Psychological Association in 2009 and is a founding member of the section dedicated to this for Division 18 (Psychologists in the Public Sector) of the APA. He is currently Clinical Administrator and Coordinator of Training for The Guidance Center’s.


Continuing Education Credits: 3.0 Continuing Education Credits are offered for this training.  Participants must arrive on time and remain in the training for it's entirety.  You must have your license number when you check in.

  • Social Workers:  3.0 Continuing Education Credits are approved for this training. 
  • Counselors: 3.0 Continuing Education Credits are approved for this training. The VCE is a National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC)-Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP) and may offer NBCC approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP is solely responsible for all aspects of the program.
  • Substance Abuse Professionals: 3.0 Non-Specific Continuing Education Credits are approved by MCBAP for substance use professionals, such as Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CADC) and Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CAADC).
  • Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP): These training hours meet the MDCH training requirement for QMHP staff.
  • Qualified Intellectural Disabilities Professional: These training hours meet the MDCH training requirement for QIDP staff. 
  • Children's Mental Health Professionals (CMHP): These training hours meet the MDCH training requirement for CMHP staff.
  • Medical Professionals: The Wayne State University School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide Continuing Medical Education for physicians. 

The Wayne State University School of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 3.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)TM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.


Registration/Walk In Policy: Participants may attempt to attend the training as a walk-in (someone that did not pre-register). However, walk-ins will NOT be guaranteed seats or materials. Walk-ins will be asked to wait until the training begins in order to receive training materials and be seated to ensure there is enough room. Plan to pre-register to ensure your attendance.
