Status Offenses and Children's Mental Health Services in  Wayne County

HandoutsAs we continue our efforts to become more “green” we will be reducing printed handouts and moving towards distributing power points and resources electronically. For this and future Children's Mental Health Grand Rounds trainings, you will receive the handouts as an attachment in your final confirmation e-mails, which are sent prior to the training. Print copies of handouts WILL NOT be provided by DWMHA for this training.

Suggested Participants: Professionals who work in Community Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, Juvenile Justice and Substance Abuse systems with children, adolescents and their families in Wayne County, including advocates, case managers, child mental health professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and supports coordinators), direct care workers, family advocates, family members, licensed professional counselors, nurses, occupational therapists, parents and peer support specialists.
Professional staff within our Community Partners who interact with children, adolescents and their families, who are part of the Community Mental Health System, including Department of Human Services; Hospitals; Law Enforcement; School Personnel, including Detroit Public Schools; and other Social Service Organizations.


Training Description: Juvenile justice programs are increasingly interested in understanding and effectively addressing youth who commit criminal and status offenses.  Detention has significant drawbacks, particularly for youth with mental health concerns, youth of color, and LGBTQ/GNC youth.  Increased system coordination and enhanced service delivery can better address the specific needs of this vulnerable population in Wayne County.

The definition and types of status offenses.
The juvenile code for status offenses.
Drawbacks of detention.
 
Identify:
 
Common characteristics and diagnoses for status offenders.
Treatment strategies and challenges while working with at-risk and juvenile justice youth.

10:30 am - 12 pm: Lindsay Yeager Carr, PhD (main presenter) - Mental health services with juvenile justice youth.  
 
About the SpeakerLindsay Yeager Carr, PhD, LP: Dr. Lindsay Carr is a psychologist practicing in Detroit, MI. Dr. Carr specializes in the treatment of health mental problems, and helps people to cope with their mental illnesses. As a psychologist, Dr. Carr evaluates and treats patients through a variety of methods, most typically being psychotherapy or talk therapy. 
 

Continuing Education Credits: 2.0 Continuing Education Credits are offered for this training.  Participants must arrive on time and remain in the training for it's entirety.  You must have your license number when you check in.

  • Social Workers:  2.0 Continuing Education Credits are approved for this training. 
  • Counselors: 2.0 Continuing Education Credits are approved for this training. The VCE is a National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC)-Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP) and may offer NBCC approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP is solely responsible for all aspects of the program.
  • Substance Abuse Professionals: 2.0 Non-Specific Continuing Education Credits are approved by MCBAP for substance use professionals, such as Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CADC) and Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CAADC).
  • Children's Mental Health Professionals (CMHP): These training hours meet the MDCH training requirement for CMHP staff.
  • Qualified Mental Health Professionals (QMHP): These training hours meet the MDCH training requirement for QMHP staff.
  • Medical Professionals: The Wayne State University School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide Continuing Medical Education for physicians. 

The Wayne State University School of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 2.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)TM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.


Registration/Walk In Policy: Participants may attempt to attend the training as a walk-in (someone that did not pre-register). However, walk-ins will NOT be guaranteed seats or materials. Walk-ins will be asked to wait until the training begins in order to receive training materials and be seated to ensure there is enough room. Plan to pre-register to ensure your attendance.
