Training Description

The entry point of this presentation is focused on our role as professionals as the National Association of Social Workers has outlined.  This requires us to leave personal beliefs at the door and utilize best practices, especially when providing services to youth and their families to ensure safety. Working with LGBTQ youth and their families engages workers and invites them to examine how their positionality regarding power and oppression affects their perspective and work.  Not only is this specific to sexual orientation and gender identity, but the content of this presentation addresses dynamics also related to class, race, ability and age.  All of these aspects of our identities and the people we work with are variables to be considered when delivering the best and most appropriate services. This training will look at why and how to do work with families who have children that identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ). Specifically, in the Community Mental Health System. Participants will leave with tools for how to contribute to preserving families WHILE building acceptance for LGBTQ youth identity.

Learning Objectives:

1. Connecting individuals work and sense of purpose to the material for the day; to building safety for youth and families
2. Understanding WHY we are covering the material we are (statistics, evidence based practices, stories)
3. Learning how we do the work; language and tools
4. Going forward: Resources and the Referral Process
