COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Psychosis is the debilitating endpoint of an unfolding biological process affecting the brain that begins well before psychosis-onset. Young people at high risk of developing a psychotic disorder such as schizophrenia show substantial benefit from early intervention services, including decreased distress, improved social and academic functioning, and reduced severity of psychosis-risk symptoms. However, psychosis-risk symptoms are often mis-labeled or overlooked, and information on appropriate treatment can be difficult to find. This course will cover 1) developmental course and social impact of schizophrenia, 2) introduce psychosis-risk syndrome and rationale for early identification and treatment, 3) present specific signs and symptoms of risk for psychosis, and 4) discuss intervention guidelines and specific strategies.

OBJECTIVES

1) Understand the rationale and goals for identifying youth at risk for psychosis.

2) Identify signs and symptoms of psychosis-risk syndrome and be able to incorporate psychosis-risk screening in clinical practice.

3) Be familiar with intervention strategies for working with psychosis-risk youth.

4) Be able to advise families and schools on strategies for helping psychosis-risk youth.
