Abstract

Up to 56 percent of people with the most serious mental illnesses have a co-occurring substance use disorder within their lifetime (Regier et al., 1990). Therefore, within specialty mental health and substance use clinical settings, it is the norm rather than the exception to see consumers with co-occurring disorders. Practitioners in the Integrated Treatment program (called integrated treatment specialists) develop integrated treatment plans and treat both serious mental illnesses and substance use disorders so that consumers do not get lost, excluded, or confused going back and forth between different mental health and substance abuse programs.

Presenters:

Michael Johnson is a certified addiction therapist from Detroit, who has worked in the substance abuse field for more than twenty years. He is also a recovering addict. He is currently the RSAT Program Director for Western Michigan University in Jackson, Michigan. He is also the founder of Justice/Quade Recovery Institute and Director of Metropolitan Counseling Centers in Detroit.

Michael works most effectively with urban populations and clients referred to as "resistant." He also speaks cogently from an Afro-Centric perspective with regard to cross-cultural issues that often impact recovery. His outpatient counseling center specializes in addiction treatment and lifestyle challenges for offenders returning back into the comunity. Below is a list of his films available through FMS.

Mark Lowis, LMSW, MINT
Licensed Master’s Social Worker

In over thirty years of practice, Mark has worked in various mental health and substance abuse treatment programs in both the public and private sector. His experience includes treatment, supervision, staff development, and management of adult and juvenile justice programs including a recovery program for Parolee-Sex Offenders with Substance Use Disorders. Mark is a member of the international Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT), a professional consultant to the Wayne State University School of Medicine's Department of Psychiatry, an Adjunct Professor at the Oakland University School of Medicine, and a nationally popular trainer and conference speaker.

Jennifer Harrison, PhD, LMSW

She brings over 20 years of clinical and administrative experience in behavioral and medical social work, and continues to be in direct practice to date. Jennifer serves as the Field Director for the School of Social Work at Western Michigan University, and teaches courses in field education, individual and family practice, and policy, as well as an interdisciplinary study abroad course in Guatemala. Her research interests include Evidence-Based Practice development and implementation, co-occurring mental health and substance abuse, assessments of student learning, and the incorporation of peers into treatment services.

Walk-ins will be asked to wait until the training begins in order to receive training materials and be seated to assure that there is enough room. This training fills quickly and walk-in space is extremely limited, if space is available at all. Plan to pre-register to ensure your attendance.

Continuing Education Information

3 Continuing Education Credits are approved for this training.  Participants must arrive on time and remain in the training for it's entirety.  

-TRAINING HOURS: This training will count toward the annual training hours required by most provider agencies.

Refund/Cancellation Policy: Cancellation/Refund Policy: Substitutions are permitted at any time. No shows will be billed at the full training rate. Cancellations must be received in writing at least 7 business days prior to training to asmith1@dwmha.com to obtain a full refund. If cancellation is received less than 7 business days prior to training then no refund will be given.
