Event Description/Learning Objectives:

Health care disparities in the US have existed since North American was colonized by the Europeans. Marginalized groups including racial and ethnic minorities, those with disabilities, etc. have been disproportionately affected. These disparities have been brought into the public eye over the last few months. The COVID-19 Pandemic along with the publicized deaths of African Americans at the hands of law enforcement during the spring of 2020 have demonstrated the need to understand how race, racism, culture and bias impact have led to healthcare disparities in the US. This workshop will give a brief overview of the historical background leading to the current health disparities as well as to present the audience with tools and next steps to address these disparities. Attendees will be asked to prepare ahead of time to taking two Implicit Association Tests as well as to complete a Survey Monkey questionnaire.
