Course Description:
Becoming a culturally competent professional includes identifying and exploring cultural heritages and worldviews to reveal how these views shape perceptions during the counseling process. This presentation examines the intersections of culture, social injustice and mental health for black/African American communities. It also explores the best practices and strategies for implementing culturally responsive care.
Course Objectives:
- Discuss and identify culturally competent and culturally responsive services.
- Discuss and identify how cultural factors and social injustice play a role in defining mental health and well-being and affect resiliency and healing.
Timed Agenda:
- 30 minutes: Discuss/identify culturally competent and culturally responsive services.
- 30 minutes: Discuss/identify how cultural factors and social injustice play a role in defining mental health and well-being.
- 30 minutes: Discuss how cultural factors and social injustice affect resiliency and healing.
- 30 minutes: Discuss how clinicians and service providers can incorporate culturally competent and responsive services into their roles.
- CHILD MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS (CMHP): These event hours meet the MDCH training requirement for CMHP staff.
- MICHIGAN CERTIFIED BOARD OF ADDICTIONS PROFESSIONALS (MACBAP): These event hours meet the MDCH training requirement for MCBAP Staff.
- QUALIFIED INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES PROFESSIONAL (QIDP): These event hours meet the MDCH training requirement for QIDP Staff.
- SOCIAL WORKERS: 2 continuing education credits are offered for this training.
- TRAINING HOURS: This event will count toward the annual training hours required by most provider agencies.
About the Presenter:
Kelly Anne Mays, LLPC Kelly Anne Mays is a licensed therapist and Suicide Prevention Outreach and Training Specialist for Hegira Health, Inc. She received her BS from Central Michigan University in Community Development, and her MS from the University of Phoenix in Counseling is currently working on a second MS in Education. Kelly is a domestic violence advocate as well as survivor and has been doing advocacy work for 11 years. She is also an author, spoken word poet, and mixed media artist, who incorporates mental health, suicide prevention and domestic violence messages into her art. She travels all over the country lecturing to audiences about the intersections of mental health and diverse communities and performing her artistry.
