Suggested Participants:
Professionals who work in Community Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, Juvenile Justice and Substance Abuse systems with children, adolescents and their families in Wayne County, including advocates, case managers, child mental health professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and supports coordinators), direct care workers, family advocates, family members, licensed professional counselors, nurses, occupational therapists, parents and peer support specialists.
Professional staff within our Community Partners who interact with children, adolescents and their families, who are part of the Community Mental Health System, including Department of Human Services; Hospitals; Law Enforcement; School Personnel, including Detroit Public Schools; and other Social Service Organizations.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Trauma is the response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event that overwhelms a person’s ability to cope. It causes feelings of helplessness, diminishes their sense of self and their ability to feel the full range of emotions and experiences. Trauma can affect both socioemotional and brain functioning. Trauma Focused CBT is an evidenced based treatment proven to decrease symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, depression and other behavioral problems in children. It can also decrease shame, improve parenting skills and strengthen the child-caregiver relationship. This course is designed to provide an overview of trauma and trauma focused interventions such as TF-CBT.

  • Seven Principals of Trauma
  • Effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences
  • Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT).
  • The use of TF-CBT as an evidenced based practice with children.
  • Overview of treatments for trauma in adults.

10:00-10:30 Defining Protective Factors
10:30-11:30 Review of literature about trauma, attachment, and protective factors; applying the review to current practice in CMH                          with families
11:30-12:00 Discussion about protective factors in current cases within the context of the presentation
