Course Description:
This training module was developed for Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) interested in making positive changes in policies that directly affect their work. These issues include low wages, high turnover, and a lack of portable training. This module will teach DSPs how to advocate for change.
Course Objectives:
Participants will:
• Learn about policy advocacy
• Build basic advocacy and policy skills
• Increase confidence when advocating
• Learn skills to navigate the political landscape
• Learn to build relationships and stay involved in the long-term

Welcome & Introduction 5 minutes
Policy Advocacy Essentials 10 minutes
Policy Advocacy Process 20 minutes
Be Fair to Direct Care video 5 minutes
Activity:
Learn how to identify your United States Representatives 10 minutes
Learn how to identify your Michigan Representatives - 10 Minutes
Preparing for Visiting a Representative -10 minutes
Activity:
Role Play Representative Visit -15 minutes
Writing Effective Letters and Emails -15 minutes
Evaluating Your Success - 15 minutes
Questions and Summary - 15 minutes
Total: 2 hours
Continuing Education Credits are offered for this training. Participants must arrive on time and remain in the training for its entirety to receive credits. No partial credit is available. You must have your license number with you to check in.
