Description:
This training module was developed by and for Michigan direct support professionals interested in learning more about empowering consumers, by providing them with the opportunity to make their own decisions. In this session, general information will be discussed about how to give people with disabilities choices. You will participate in activities that will help you to avoid influencing consumers so that they may have the opportunity to make their own choices.
Objectives:
- Understand the definition of choice.
- Understand why people need choices.
- Understanding why you may want to make choices for someone.
- Identify three ways to assist you in supporting the individual’s choices.
- Learn about what to read & who to call for more information
Timed Agenda:
Welcome & Introduction 5 minutes
- Possibilities Video 5 minutes
- Definition of Choice 30 minutes
- Ways to Encourage Choice-Making 30 minutes
- Training Activity 30 minutes
- Questions 20 minutes
Total: 2 hours
Continuting Education Credits:
2 Continuing Education Credits are approved for this training. Participants must arrive on time and remain in the training for it's entirety.
- QUALIFIED INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES PROFESSIONALS (QIDP): These training hours meet the MDCH training requirement for QIDP staff.
