TRAINING ABSTRACT: This three-day introductory training will use didactic presentations, small group discussions and role plays with feedback to help participants understanding and learn the skills of Family Psychoeducation (FPE).  FPE is an evidence-based practice shown to significantly improve family coping with members who have severe mental illness.  Through providing a biopsychosocial understanding of illness to families and using problem-solving methods this approach to intervention maximizes autonomous coping and mutual aid.  FPE is an effective evidence-bsed practice for many consumers and their families.  SAMHSA and MDCH are highly committed to this intervention and will be writing expectations about using it into contracts with community mental health centers.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Participants will be able to:
1.  Understand family dynamics as they apply to having a member diagnosed with a serious mental illness.
2.  Develop a working knowledge of the biopsychosocial impact of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
3.  Develop a working knowledge of substance abuse and recovery with dually diagnosed clients.
4.  Develop an appreciation of the recent research on helping families with mentally ill members cope.
5.  Learn the critical program elements that comprise FPE.
6.  Learn how to engage and join with families in multi-family groups.
