Suggested Participants include all Wayne County health care professionals in all disciplines and health settings, nurses, health care systems directors, physicians, public health professionals, community agency directors, policy makers, social workers, medical health providers, clinic directors, emergency room directors, governmental health program directors, and community advocates.

Conference Objectives:

  • Increase awareness and knowledge of the strength of diverse communities in Wayne County and the impact of cultural competence in the delivery of health and human services.
  • Share best practices model for delivering culturally competent health services that impact social determinants of health in Wayne County.
  • Provide a forum for developing inter-organizational and community cooperation and collaboration aimed at addressing disparities in health care services. 

Conference Agenda will include:

Keynote Speaker: Jorge Chinea, PhD, Director, Wayne State University, Chicano/Boricua Studies "The Impact of Family Culture in Health Care Decisions"

A Panel Discussion on "Multicultural Conversations in Health Care Delivery"

Workshops/Breakout Presentations:

  • Health Care Disparities within Public Health Systems - Loretta Davis
  • Best Practice Models Serving Arab Americans - Mouhanad Hammami, MD; Adnan Hammd, PhD
  • Effective Cultural Competent Models Serving the Latino Community - Ricardo Guzman
  • Historical Trauma and Theoretic Impact on Inter generational Behavioral Health Issues of Native Amercians- Regina Zapinski
  • Health Care Beliefs and Practices of Asian Americans - Shenlin Chen 

Interactive Forum: "Multicultural Issues in Health Care Reform from a Federal Perspective" 

Continuing Education Credits:

Social Work Credits are Pending Approval.

Conference Registration:

Pre-Registration is REQUIRED. Seating is LIMITED.

The conference registration fee is $60. Registration and payment is due by noon on Friday, February 26, 2010.  Conference fee includes attendance, training materials, continental breakfast and lunch.

If cancellation is received less than 7 calendar days prior to conference, then no refund will be given.
